took pictures in church and nothing came out good because of the lighting in church. tried ddiferent modes noting worked!!!!

    I need help with my nikon d200, for a camera that expensive, I should be able to just take a picture without  problems. First, I was taking a picture inside a church, the light inside the church was obviously dimmer, so when i tried using the flash it was dark...with a flash it was even worse... tried using different modes/settings it was even worse......and i've read the manuals over and over again....nothing seems to be working!!! Is my camera defected????HELP...HELP!!!!!! RUBEN
