twilight: new moon, new director - Twilight" fans are already champing at the bit for the second installation -- and luckily the people are going to get what they want. Unfortunately, this means the original director is out. Because of scheduling conflicts, Catherine Hardwicke won't be on hand to lead the characters in the next chapter of this vampy saga. So who is charged with the mission then?

Hardwicke is best known for directing "Thirteen" -- a movie filled with girlie, teen angst. Her ability to get in the mind of a 13-year-old-girl so well made her a perfect candidate to direct the movie version of "Twilight" because the story is told completely through 17-year-old Bella's perspective. Would "New Moon" be as successful if a man, for example, directed it? While the movie version isn't told solely through Bella's mind, the material is all about the romance -- and, of course, a dreamy vampire.

The new director for the Twilight franchise is a man name Chris Weitz (The Golden Compass),  Weitz is best-known for his work with his brother Paul. Remember stiffler and his mom; well, Weitz and his brother directed and produced American Pie and then were nominated for an Academy Award for best screenplay for About a Boy, which they also co-directed.

When Catherine Hardwicke directed Twilight, it grossed more than $141 million but as they say ever success and failure messes up some relationships and this was one of those.  Now that she is not making New Moon, lets see if Weitz can out do 141 million bar, "He's the quality-of-life-choice," says one source. While Summit insists "we have not yet signed Chris Weitz to do New Moon," and Weitz's agency says no deal has been signed, other sources say the deal is imminent, and that Summit has stopped negotiations with other potential Moon directors.
