    Hi,
There's a reasonable chance that the overheating caused the head to warp and allow exhaust gases to pass into the cooling system, thus causing overheating and your coolant reservoir to overflow. But there's a chance (however slim) that your overflowing is air trapped in the cooling system if a lot boiled out when it overheated.

Since most of the 81 motors were 11mm 1.6 engines which were notorious for insufficent head gasket retention force, you are probably looking at doing the head gasket. Get the head to s hop that can check it for flatness - if it warped you may be better off replacing the head but they can be skimmed (depending on the severity of the warpage). Skimming them requires careful attention to the prechamber inserts - there's info on here about that somewhere. If you can, get head studs instead of bolts when you reinstall the head.

So, let the engine get nice and cold then start it up. Check for pressure at the coolant reservoir within the first minute or so. if you have pressure it's an indication of a leaking head gasket. If not you may just have a big air bubble in the cooling system. If your temperature gauige went up to more than 3/4 you probably have head gasket damage
