what is an altar in term of day of the dead

I attended a day of the dead ceremony with the Mexicans in LA but I couldn't see any Altar there. I was wondering to know that what is an altar in term of day of the dead.

    A Day of the Dead Altar is a place which may include of photographs, bread, other foods, flowers, toys and other favorite things of deceased.

    The main purpose is to express their feelings for love ones to remind them that their presence is still very strongly felt.
