    The crips are a gang based out of Los Angeles, California. Their name was originally derived as 'Cribs' as in baby cribs to represent the relatively young age of the first members in 1969 (most were 17). Eventually as the gang gained notoriety, members began walking with canes as a representation of their self-proclaimed status as pimps. 

   
   

   Upon seeing the canes, people in the community began calling the gang members 'Crips', which was short for cripples. As there are no known Crips in West Side Africa (and as per Google Translate) the Swahili word for Crip is Crip as they do not have such a word.
