here is my order, oystercard followed by travelcard, if you are doing just one trip, I would buy a one way travelcard and if all else fails and you don't care about paying for rent, parking and congestion charge I would recommend renting a car.

forget about renting a car in london especially if you are going to be going in and out of centeral (downtown) london.  You will be paying for parking, congestion charge and most of the time will be sitting in a traffic jam.  Go for a travelcard, which will allow you to travel in underground trains and on any of the busses.

Best way to travel in London is by using the London underground via tubes (trains).  These trains run in a subway type system under the city and is the fastest and I would say the cheapest way to travel in london.  They beat the rushhour traffic, don’t get stuck in traffic and run every couple of minutes in the peak times and on regular intervals for the rest of the day.  Get yourself an Oyster card, which is an electronic top up card and can be used on public transport in London acting as a single tickets, period tickets and travel permits.
