    That depends on which WW1 Russian you are refering to. Imperial Russia was protecting its allies and showcasing its power. Post Revolution Russia wanted to get rid of the Czar, and didn't last very long. The Bulshevicks, on the other hand, were mainly concerned with getting out of the war and creating their communist utopia.
