Most popular belief is that Robert Burns wrote this poem, however the earliest version of it can be found back in the 15th centuary by an annonymous author.

There has been parts or versions attributed to a couple of people over the years, however the first record of the song in its current known form is in a letter written by burns in 1788 although Burns never claimed it as his own. Its thought that it was passed down verbatim and Burns simply wrote it down.

Originaly the tune was different to the one nown now and apparently Burns thought it was mediocre. The current versin was first published in connection with the lrics in 1799, several years after Burns death. The current version would appear to have developed from a mid 17th centuary tune called "The Duke of Buccleugh’s tune"
