A lawyer from Maryland, Francis Scott Key, wrote the Star Spangled Banner.
He wrote it while being held on a British boat, the HMS Tonnant, during the during the Battle of Baltimore on the night of September 13–14th, 1814 as the British were attacking Ft. McHenry.

He was on the boat to help negotiate the release of some prisoners.  Since he had become familiar with the plans of the British, they kept him on the boat until after bombarding Ft.McHenry.  The flag in his poem, which later became our national anthem, was flying over Ft.McHenry at the time.

Ft. McHenry was defending Baltimore, Maryland, a port city right on the Chesapeake Bay.
