The tree is about 12 years old, 30 feet tall and has several superficial splits in the bark.  One split however is more like a long gash that is widening and deeper than the others, I'd say about a half to three quarters inch deep.  Most of the inner layer of the trunk is hard, but near the bottom of the gash it is softer and crumbly.  There are earwigs in it and potato bugs.

You may have anthracnose. First stage it splitting bark. Second stage is the leaves turning color prematurely starting at the bottom and working toward the top. If it's not treated by the time the color gets to the top, it will die. The chemical used to kill the virus cannot be bought over the counter (of course) so you have to hire someone like Chemlawn to treat it.
