    Hi,
Many of these clocks have an hour hand with a keyed bushing, meaning it can be put on the hour tube in one or two positions.  Let's say that it strikes 12.  The hand could possibly be on in the 12 o'clock position or directly opposite at the 6 o'clock position.  So, if it strikes 12 and the hour hand is at the 6 o'clock position, unscrew the minute hand nut (noting that it is pointing at 12 o'clock because you have just set it there to make the clock strike). REMOVE the hour hand. Rotate it to the 12 o'clock position and REINSTALL it.  Put the minute hand back to the 12 o'clock position and tighten down the hand nut.  If this has the type of hour hand is not keyed, then you can slip the hour hand around to the hour that just struck.  For example, turn the minute hand to the 12 o'clock position and listen to the number of strikes.  If it strikes 5 and the hour hand is pointing to 3, then slip the hour hand around to the 5. This type of hand setup accounts for about 95%of clocks made.  One thing to check is that the hour hand is pushed in on the tube so it is tight.  It is a taper fit and the further it is pushed on the tighter it gets.  But don't push too tight.  Also check for the hour hand clearance.  As it rotates, it should not touch the dial or the minute hand.  That will stop the clock.

Most modern mechanical clocks are designed with what we call a "safe back" mechanism.  That is that it is safe to turn the minute hand bacwards to set the clock.  To check this, GENTLY move the minute hand backwards.  Anywhere between the hour and 20 minutes before the hour, or between the half hour and 10 minutes the after the hour you, should hear a click.  This would be the strike trip cam passing backwards past the strike lift lever.  This is ok.  If you feel it stop with a lot of resistance, then do NOT turn it any more.  You will have to set the clock by turning the hand forward.
