    Hi There,
In recent years stories about computer viruses, spyware, hackers, and Internet frauds have become commonplace in the news. As consumers, we know the importance of protecting our computers and personal information against these and other threats. However, how do we know for certain we are safe when we logon the World Wide Web? If you use Microsoft Windows XP, there is an easy way to ensure that you can surf with confidence.

The XP operating system has a Security Center that contains all of the information and configurations of your PC’s security. To access the Security Center click “Start”, then “Control Panel”. In the Control Panel, double click the Security Center icon (multi–colored shield).

In the Security Center are three security essentials: Firewall, Automatic Updates and Virus Protection. All three are necessary to protect your computer against Internet threats.
    Firewall

Windows XP comes standard with an integrated firewall. Some may think that the Windows firewall is all they need to surf the web safely. The Windows firewall provides some protection, but doesn’t guard against all possible dangers.

The Windows firewall helps block viruses and worms from reaching your computer. It will prompt you for certain connection requests and it will create a security log. This records attempts, both successful and unsuccessful, to connect to your computer and can be a useful troubleshooting tool.

The Windows firewall doesn’t detect or disable computer viruses and worms. It doesn’t stop you from opening or warn you of emails that have dangerous attachments, and it doesn’t block spam or unsolicited emails. This is why additional software is needed to protect your computer and personal information.
    Automatic Updates

The Automatic Updates, if it is on, will automatically keep your Windows program current. This will keep it running smoothly and help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats.
    Virus Protection

The Virus Protection window only monitors antivirus software installed on your computer. This is not antivirus software and should alert you if you don’t have antivirus software installed on your computer.

The best option for complete Internet security is to purchase an Internet security suite. A suite, combined with the features in the Windows Security Center, will protect you against viruses, spyware, harmful emails and instant messages, phishing scams and other Internet threats. Additionally, many suites have parental controls that will allow parents to regulate their children’s use of the Internet. After your Internet security software is properly installed, the Virus Protection window in the Windows Security Center should detect the software and indicate that the computer is protected. You can easily check the status of your computer’s security from the desktop.

On a default Windows desktop, the security indication is located on the bottom toolbar on the right–hand side. You may have to click the “Show Hidden Icons” button. Here you will see a shield that indicates your computer’s security status. Here are the meanings of the Windows security shield icons: (Information from Microsoft.com)
Multi–colored shield– indicates important security and settings.
Blue shield with question mark– notifies you of a potential risk.
Green shield with check– situation is more secure. Your computer is using recommended security settings.
Yellow shield with exclamation point– warning: situation is potentially harmful. Consider adjusting security settings to enhance the security of your computer.
Red shield with “X”– your computer’s current security settings are not recommended.
