   Hi,
   The potato has special conductive qualities in it, the juices and starch act as a natural battery. What you would do is put in nails on opposite sides (like you said), and attach wires and put them on the lightbulb, you should be able to generate power for a little while. If that doesn't work, soak the potato in powerade or gatorade (something with electrolytes), then try again.
