During the 1980s, the country experienced a high rate of growth in vegetable oil consumption attributed to population growth, decreasing real price of vegetable ghee and increase in per capita income. During the decade ending 1984-85, per capita consumption of vegetable ghee increased by about 80 p, er cent i.e. from 3.77 kg per annum in 1975-76 to 6.76 kg. in 1984-85. The demand for vegetable ghee/cooking oils is projected to grow by 4.4 per cent per annum on the average between 1988 to 2000 and domestic production of edible oils is expected to increase 7.3 per cent during the same period. Table-V illustrates the rising trend of production of vegetable ghee and cooking oil in Pakistan.
