All the previous versions of Windows and Windows 7 hide file extensions by default. That is a real security threat or risk and Microsoft need to fsolve this problem in Windows 7. The most common technique virus authors’ use is disguising an .exe file as .doc, .jpg, or .txt when it is actually a hidden executable file (.exe) making you install and run a malicious program on your system. For example a person with bad intensions can name a virus “pictures-of-britney.jpg.exe”, if your file extension was hidden you would be unable realize the file was an .exe because you would only see “pictures-of-britney.jpg” and once you realized what you did it’s to late.

Here are few steps that help you to see File Extension in Windows 7

    1. First you should make sure that you can see the extension of the files (e.g. fileName.jpg), if you unable to see then open Windows Explorer and push the Alt key from the keyboard, and press on Folder Options through the button of Tools menu.

    2. After doing the above mentioned procedure, press “Organize” tab and scroll down and further press “Folder and search options”.

    3.  Here you will press the “View” tab and  scroll down until you see “Hide extensions for known file types”, un-check this line here by clicking on the check box.

    4. Now press “OK” and your file extensions will no longer be hidden.
