Barack Obama will finally be sworn in as president tomorrow; just days before the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth, and his inauguration theme will reflect the timing: "A New Birth of Freedom," a phrase from the Gettysburg Address.

The Portland Obama Inaugural Ball is a grassroots event celebrating this historical event with no affiliation to the Democratic Party, the Obama campaign, or any political organization. The cost per person is around $70. Money raised through this event will go to the Portland Food Bank and the Royal Rosarian Foundation Field Trip Project.

At the event there will be:

Video stream of the Inauguration ceremony that will have taken place earlier in the day

Simulcast links to the Inaugural celebrations in both Chicago and DC

A life-sized standing Obama cutout for picture taking opportunities

Raffle of give-aways from local donors, including at least several pieces of artwork from local artists

Opportunities to sign up for community service projects through Service Nation or Hands On Portland

    Time and Place
Start Time: Tuesday, January 20, 2009 at 7:00pm
End Time: Wednesday, January 21, 2009 at 12:00am
    Location: Scottish Rite Ballroom
    Street: 1512 SW Morrison St.
    City/Town: Portland, OR

The inauguration will cost 100 million dollars! Not sure if that includes the train trip and the concert at the Lincoln Memorial. As we know Obama is the first bi-racial president. In 2004 President Bush spent 50 million and 40 million was privately raised. Considering that Obama constantly says that the country is in the worst financial crisis since the great depression; it’s a surprise that he would spend 100 million out of national treasure.

It sure will be an event of a lifetime for which history books will memorialize for ever more. This will be an opportunity for the people to create and be a part of this history. Expected attendees of this event are around 4 million plus. This is part of US history and their opportunity to show their commitment to change as well.
