    For Catholics,are obliged to go to Mass on January 1st not because it's New Years, but because it is the Octave of Christmas, the Feast of Mary the Mother of Our Lord.

    The following holy days are observed in Australia:

    *  The Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ,

    * the Epiphany,

    * the Ascension of Christ,

    * the feast of the Body and Blood of Christ,

    * the feast of the Assumption of Mary the Mother of God.

    But in  Australia, the feast of the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God is not observed as a Holy Day of Obligation.
