my good male friend is spanish and always calls me mama/mami

I really dont want to ask him why he calls me this but I really want to know in the spanish culture what does it mean? He is my good friend and has the rights to hug, kiss me and etc. but we ALWAYS call each other our friend/good friend. I really do like him but will not express that because it's too complicated.

    I depends if he is puerto rican then if might jus be the way he talks, they useually just naturally talk like that even women. But he would talk like that to all his other friends too.

    the answer is simple.
    TALK.
    you really need to ask your friend what it means or what he means by it and how he actually feels. you can make it casual if you want.
    communication is the key to a relationship and all that blah blah blah.
    seriously just throw it into the conversation one day its not a big deal
