According to the official BMW website the 135i Coupé accelerates from 0–100 km/h within 5.3 seconds, although Car and Driver magazine calculated 4.7 seconds for 0-60 mph acceleration, and a quarter mile time of 13.3 seconds at 106 mph. High speed is electronically restricted to 250 km/h (155.3 mph). Fuel efficiency is enhanced to 30.7 mpg-US as an enhancement of 18% as compared to its predecessor ranges and collections.

During the early part of 2006 the 5-speed manual transmission in the 116i and 118i was taken placed in favor of the 6-speed gearbox available for the rest of the collection. From 2011, 135i model is available with 7 speed DCT gearbox option. On 30 June 2007, The 1 Series coupe (E82) and convertible (E88) were launched and available for sale in the United States and Canada. Other countries got the 120i and 125i from these destinations. The convertible was dissimilar to the 3 Series convertible as it utilized a soft-top instead of a folding hardtop. This is lighter and provides more boot space than the folding hardtop would permit. However in the North America the introduction of the coupe and cabriolet was taken placed in the second quarter of 2008.
