The 1 Series was released during autumn 2004 and have many structural, chassis, power train, hardware and electronic elements with that it share with the larger 3 Series. The automobile was designed to deliver a lower point of entry into the BMW range as the 3 Series moved continually up in the market. Earlier launched as a 5-door hatchback, a 3-door version was also released in the July 2007. The price range of the series 1 lies between the MINI and the present E90 3 Series. Because the coupe is the only unique wheel drive vehicle in its range, it is often placed as the successor of the BMW 2002.

The 1 Series coupe (E82) and convertible (E88) are available on sale in the United States and Canada simultaneously, in model year 2008 from 30 June 2007, as the 128i and the 135i. Other countries obtained the 120i and 125i in both platforms. The convertible, unlike the 3 Series convertible, applied a soft-top rather than a folding hardtop. This is lighter, cheaper to construct and provide more trunk space than the folding hardtop would permit.

The North American launched of the coupe and cabriolet was taken place during the second quarter of year 2008, which was mentioned as for helping BMW overtake Lexus as the top luxury brand.
