During an earthquake if you are indoors, the safest place to be is under a solid table or desk.  You should cover your eyes to protect them from flying flass and hold on tightly to the leg of the table.  If you are outside, it’s better to be in an open space, away from buildings, trees and power lines.

If you don't have a solid table you are on your own.
