   Classics is the branch of Humanities dealing with different aspects of the ancient Mediterranean world such as languages, literature, history, art, and other; especially emphasizing on Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome during the time known as classical antiquity, roughly spanning from the Ancient Greek Bronze Age in 1000 BCE to the Dark Ages circa CE 500. The word "Classics" also refers to the literature of that period.

   Well that’s what Wikipedia says. What I am going to tell you has nothing to with literature or other aspects of ancient Mediterranean world. What I want to tell you is some thing completely out of the blue. Every body doing there classics dissertation would write about the ancient Mediterranean world, about ancient Greece etc. These topics have been dissected to the core. They are long, boring and tedious. I have read so many dissertations about ancient Greece and the Dark ages that it seems I was born in those days. What I have seldom read about the current classics. About classic movies, classic cars, classic games.
   
   Consult with your dissertation advisor. If you are allowed to write about such classics as films and cars I assure you, you will not be stuck whole night reading about boring ancient history. What better way to spend time writing about a classic car if you are a car buff or about a classic game that took place 25 years ago and analyzing why so and so won and what reason so and so lost. Think how great it would be if you were able to write about film classics such as Casablanca and Gone with the wind. Why were these films so successful? What made them instant classics that they are still viewed with enthusiasm?
   
   If you are not interested in your dissertation, chances are you would get stuck in your classics thesis one way or another.  Even I’m a college professor and I would loathe writing pages and pages on Bronze ages or the Dark ages. However I would love to give my inputs on a classic movie like Ben Hur. Or write about a classic car and why it caught the imagination of a generation. Don’t limit yourself to the classical age. There is huge scope in modern classics.

   Note: Consult your dissertation advisor before choosing any dissertation topic about classic cars or films. In my university I’ve had a student write a dissertation on why Gone with the wind was an instant classic. But different universities requirements vary. Some may just want you to focus on the ancient Mediterranean. It is better that you consult your advisor just in case.
