    Hi,
The CH 1700 is a good control. It also will fit over the same area the Quicksilver control used. You will have to do some minor modifications. Follow the instructions carefully and test the orientation of the cables, I have seen the shift cable backwards a few times!
As for the Mercury control it is a pretty straightforward control. If properly lubed and adjusted and not excessively worn then it should give you great service. It comes apart fairly easily. You will also need to remove the handle bolt in the bottom as well as the screws with nuts. Once out the unit should come right out.

there is a small set s***w only visible through the bottom of the shift lever, and only when the throttle is moved ahead about 20% (or back, I can't recall right now) I think that set s***w if tightened slightly will pre-load the throttle for you, so it will hold still.
