With wild card Clijsters in hot form and at least one unseeded player guaranteed a semi-final berth on the other side of the draw, could the women’s final be an unseeded affair?

The only seeded player remaining on the opposite side of the draw is 9th seed Caroline Wozniacki but she faces America's Melanie Oudin in the quarterfinals. Oudin has proved she has a penchant for sending the seeds packing at Flushing Meadows, and the Danish woman is not the highest ranked opponent she has faced here. She may well continue her giant killing form here.

On the other side of the draw, Kim Clijsters plays Serena Williams in the semi-final, and the Belgian cannot be written off in their match. The seeds could well have departed Flushing Meadows before the last Saturday of the tournament rolls around.
