We live in a place where there are a lot of forested parts. Our house is built on a wide clearing but all around us are thick woods. We also live nearby a dense mangrove area and a swampy river runs right through it.The place is beautiful in the morning, but when night falls it gets a little disconcerting. All sorts of hooting and howling punctuate the middle of the night. We have grown accustomed to these already and we just dismiss it as the wind or an animal. One overcast day, my friend Drew and I went to the swamp. We had set out nets for crabs there earlier so we were expecting a big haul. When we arrived, our friend Ray was already there with his wife and his newborn baby. They live much closer to the swamp than us so it was normal for the entire family to be there. Ray was already attending to the nets and sure enough, we had a big catch. We decided to stay a bit longer at the swamp to feast on the crabs. We set up camp just by the water.Soon enough, rain started to pour. It wasn't unexpected though as we saw that the sky was looking gloomy earlier that day. It was a good thing that Ray brought along beer with him so we had something to while away the time while waiting for the rain to subside. The rain didn't let up and continued to pour even after sundown. We're usually out of the swamp and back at the house before nightfall. That was the first time we were at the swamp after dark.It was well into the night before we could make our way back out of the swamp. Ray decided to be left behind with his family because it was hard for them to trek back in the dark. Our limited vision, coupled with the muddy and slipper track, made the trek harder than usual.
