As Japan's nuclear crisis continues to unfold, the European Union has announced it will now conduct stress tests on all its nuclear power stations, Germany announced it would shut down all seven of its reactors built before 1980. After reviewing the disastrous breakdown of safety back-up systems in Japan an agreement was quickly reached that all of Europe’s more than 140 nuclear reactors will be stress tested by the end of the year. Gunther Oettinger, EU Energy Commissioner said that we want to look at the risks and the safety issues in the light of events in Japan and carry out a reassessment. He said that the stress test on the basis of the European standards is the correct instrument." The European Union has now placed a request with the International Atomic Energy Agency to call an emergency meeting of its members in Vienna next week.
