The term, "Black Friday" originated  from the retailer's shift to profitability during the holiday season. In old days accounting records were kept by hand, red ink referred to financial loss while black ink was the  symbol of profitability, thus this popular fiscal terms of being "in the red," (losing money) or "in the black" (profitable) was coined.
