    It's purely a custom. As Gershon said, it does help one concentrate. I think of it as a meditative practice which engages the whole body, a sort of Jewish "yoga".

    It's called shuckling (or shockeling) and as Leoardo said, it helps you concentrate, it also boosts enotional intensity. In Chassidic lore, it is believed to be an expression of the souls desire to abandon the body.
