Labour Day is an annual holiday in order to celebrate the economic and social achievements of the workers. Labour Day has its origins in the movement of labor Union, specifically the movement of eight hour day, it advocated eight hours for work, eight hours for recreation, and eight hours for rest.

In New Zealand, Labour Day is celebrated on the fourth Monday in October. Its origins are traced back to eight-hour working day movement that arose in the Wellington colony in 1840. Primarily just because of the carpenter Samuel Parnell's refusal to work for more than eight hours a day. He encouraged some other tradesmen to also to work for eight hours a day and in the year October 1840, a workers' meeting passed a resolution to support the idea. In the year October 28, 1890, the anniversary of the eight-hour day was celebrated with a parade. It was the 50th Anniversary of this special parade .The event was celebrated annually in late month of October as either the Labour Day or Eight-Hour Demonstration Day. In the year 1899 government legislated that the day might be a public holiday from 1900. The day was celebrated on different days in many different provinces. This led to the ship owners complaining about the seamen that were taking excessive holidays by having only one Labor Day in one port then the another in their next port. In the year 1910 the government regulated that the holiday would be observed on the same day throughout the nation.
