At some point during my 5K race, usually only when it is cold,  I will have an episode where I start to gag due to mucous.  I have to slow way down and it is affecting my performance.  Any suggestions?

    HI,
As you start to get in better shape and start pushing yourself, your body starts clearing itself out. This is a good thing. You have to take a good look at your diet and eat good clean balanced foods.I really don't know anything about your present and past training or height weight age so i'm just working with what your explaining to me.There is many things that can effect an effort good and bad.I would strongly recomend you not drink the sparks or eat the power bar.Just stick to water. That could be some of the problem, but phlegm is just a diet issue.

Just to give you more information about my status.
I am in great physical shape.  I am not new to running.  Have been conditioning year round for the past 2 years.  I have been running my 5k races around 16:35-16:27.  I eat a healthy well-balanced diet.  I pay attention to make sure I am well hydrated.  I only use sport drinks after a 14 mile run or an extremely hard work out.  I don't eat power bars. It is the cold weather that brings on the increase mucous that in the end makes me gag. I don't have problems with this in warm weather.   This is the issue I would like to resolve.  Any suggestions would be helpful.
