Although cars still have a "Fan Belt" but it is known as the Auxillary Drive belt now. It drives things such as the alternator, water pump, air con compressor, power steering pump etc. The term fan belt is a left over from days of old when the same belt drove the fan aswell - its still a term that is used though.

First remove the bolt from the bracket which keeps the alternator in position for the belt to be "taught".
Then place the new belt in position
wrap the belt around everything but the alternator, and then move the tensioner until you can wrap the belt around the alternator (or any other pulley, but the alternator pulley being small makes it easier).

For your car, you need a repair manual for the diagram if it's not under your hood. And yes, you may need a special tool for the tensioner. If there's no diagram, you need to look for anything that is not the alternator, fan/water puump, power steering pump, a/c compressor, idler (small pulley that looks very similar to the one for the tensioner but is fixed in position, if equipped).
