Last year I noticed my double knockout roses changing.  The leaves became redish and the thorns are very large.  The stems that contain these items don't have many flowers on them.  Does this sound like a fungus?  Should I cut these stems off or treat somehow?

I also have this problem on several of my knockout roses; hope we get an answer however the thick canes with the large thorns have a cluster of 5-6 blooms at the top on mine
