My son is working on a grammar worksheet (5th grade) asking him to identify nouns and adjectives. The words in question are math, music, spelling, science, and history. The dictionary identifies all these as nouns but I argue they could also be adjectives as in math class, history class, etc. Am I correct that they are adjectives when used in such a manner?

    hello

In grammar, an adjective is a word whose main syntactic role is to modify a noun or pronoun, giving more information about the noun or pronoun's referent.

If we go according to the definition of adjective then yes you are right. It make sense of modifying the word maths. As it is giving information about maths class.

    hope it helps
