   This sounds like it would be pretty scary for you. Of course, there is no way to know for sure what is going on without seeing a doctor, but there are several possible causes for this pain, some serious and others not. On the serious side, sudden intense headache can be a sign of a stroke or a TIA (transient ischemic attack), which is a very brief stroke lasting only a few minutes.
