The town was named after the "hagunoy" (scientific name Spilanthes acmella) a medicinal plant that used to be abundant in its river banks. The original populace used its leaves as their herbal remedy of choice for common illnesses. According to the latest census, it has a population of 126,329 inhabitants in a total land area of 103.10 square kilometres. It is the Birthplace of Former Senator Blas F. Ople.
