Not documented but the commonly accepted version is that Catherine was born in Ringen (Rõngu), in present-day Estonia. During that time Estonia was the Swedish province of Livonia. Her original name was 'Martha Skavronska'.

Although Catherine the great was born in Gingen but she was raised in Marienburg by Ernst Glück, the Lutheran pastor and educator who first translated the Bible into Latvian.

She became the second wife of Peter the Great and was considered as one of the most powerful women alive and one of the first co-ruler women.   She co-managed with her husband from 1724 until his death early in the next year, and reigned as sole Empress of Russia from 1725 until her death. The life of Catherine I was said by Voltaire to be nearly as extraordinary as Peter the Great himself.
