1.Surf the Internet with your own laptop. Increasingly, libraries offer wireless connections, and unlike certain bookstores, they don't charge you to use them, because libraries are already supported by taxes.

    2. Download free e-books. That David Sedaris book I've been meaning to read is available in this format, I just discovered. There's a waiting list, but hey! He'll still be funny when my turn comes.

    3. Download free audio books. I'm planning to download a couple of these to entertain my daughters. Downloads are for a set time period, which is what enables libraries to offer them.

    4. Renew books online. If you still need what you're reading, you can get an extension online. This is so much better than a late fee.

    5. Sit on your own couch (maybe even without shoes and a shirt) and still be served. Online book renewals and e-book and audio book downloads are three things you can do from home. But you can also do research for papers, or simply to satisfy your own curiosity.  Many libraries also offer databases of articles from publications that ordinarily charge money to read their archives, and you can access these by typing in your library card number and PIN. What's more, you can search poetry, photographs, maps, genealogy, and more.
