Diwali is also spelled as Devali in some regions or Deepavali, famously renowned as the "festival of lights", is a significant five-day carnival in Hinduism, Jainism, and Sikhism, commemorated for distinct causes, happening between mid-October and mid-November. For Hindus, Diwali is one of the most significant carnivals of the year and is commemorated in families by accomplishing customary undertakings simultaneously in their homes. For Jains, Diwali brands the attainment of moksha or nirvana by Mahavira in 527 BC. For Sikhs, Diwali is significant because it celebrates the issue from jail of the sixth guru, Guru Hargobind, who furthermore released 52 Hindu monarchs held captive by Mughal Emperor with him in the Gwalior Fort in 1619.

Deepavali is an authorized vacation in India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Mauritius, Guyana, Trinidad & Tobago, Suriname, Malaysia, Singapore, and Fiji.

The word "Diwali" is a contraction of Deepavali a Sanskrit word which means into "row of lamps". Diwali involves the illuminating of small clay lamps (diyas or dīpas in Sanskrit) brimming with oil to mean the victory of good across evil. During Diwali, all the celebrants fray fresh clothes and distribute chocolates and snacks with family members and friends. Most Indian commerce communities originate the commercial year on the first day of Diwali.
