Diwali is basically a festival in the Hindu culture. It is also spelled Devali in certain regions. Basically the original word is Deepavali . It is popularly known as the "festival of lights", and is an important five-day festival in Hinduism, Jainism, and Sikhism. It is celebrated for different reasons, occurring between mid-October and mid-November. The Hindus celebrate Diwali as one of the most important festivals of the year and is celebrated in families by performing traditional activities together in their homes. The Jains do so to mark the attainment of moksha or nirvana by Mahavira in 527 BC. For the Sikhs, the festival of Diwali is important because it celebrates the release from prison of the sixth guru, Guru Hargobind, who also rescued 52 Hindu kings held captive by Mughal Emperor with him in the Gwalior Fort in 1619. It is observed as an official holiday in India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Mauritius, Guyana, Trinidad & Tobago, Suriname, Malaysia, Singapore and Fiji. Basically, it is a celebration of the victory of light over darkness. Diwali is also observed as the beginning of the Hindu New Year and believed to be an opportunity to make a fresh start. Starting fresh, people clean our homes, put on new clothes, start new business accounts and beautify our homes. However, Diwali is incomplete without the worshipping of Mahalakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity.
