Australian citizens aged 18 or over can apply to renounce their Australian citizenship. Australia is a signatory to the United Nations Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness. No application to renounce Australian citizenship will be approved unless there is evidence that the applicant is a citizen of another country or on renunciation will acquire the citizenship of another country.
Children can apply to renounce Australian citizenship, only if they were born or are ordinarily resident in a foreign country and are not entitled, under the law of that country, to acquire the nationality or citizenship of that country because they are Australian citizens. Applications for children under 16 years of age must be made by a responsible parent.
