How do you know when a site was updated?

I'd like to know a way to find out if a website has been updated recently. Some people type javascript:alert(document.lastModified) in the browser window, but it doesn't work for me because it gives me the current time.

    some sites will place a timestamp to tell you when it was updated recently for example even this site tells you when the last question was posted or answered.
