Change the battery.  To do that, remove the pin in the ring trim by pulling it straight out.  Then turn the whole device in the direction of the arrow on the cover (toward "off").  When it comes loose, it will be connected to wires from the ceiling by a quick release connector -- squeeze the sides of the connector and pull it off.  This will expose the batter compartment - follow the directions for replacing the 9V battery.  Then replace the quick release connector, s***w the device back onto the trim rim (taking care to line up the holes for the pin), replace the pin, and you're done!
