Safina's US Open defeat to unseeded Petra Kvitova has put her world no. 1 ranking position under the spotlight again. Is she really the best female player on the planet?

    Safina's number one ranking was mocked by Wimbledon champion Serena Williams after the American's win at SW19, and the fact that the supposed best player in womens' tennis has never won one of the flagship tournaments does seem to be quite odd. Undoubtedly the Williams sisters' decision to pick and choose which tournaments they play in has affected the rankings, and perhaps the WTA should award more points for Grand Slam victories to put this right.
