   When a person eats, food passes from the throat to the stomach through esophagus. When food enters the stomach, a ring of muscle fibers to prevent food from moving backward into the esophagus. These muscle fibers are known as lower esophageal sphincter or LES. If the sphincter muscle does not close well, then the food, liquid and stomach leaks back into the esophagus. This is known as reflux or gastreosophageal reflux. This might be the result of reflux, and can also damage the esophagus.
   
   The risk factors for reflux include haital hernia, it is a condition in which some part of the stomach moves along with the diaphragm.
