When a person eats, food passes from the throat to the stomach through esophagus. When food enters the stomach, a ring of muscle fibers to prevent food from moving backward into the esophagus. These muscle fibers are known as lower esophageal sphincter or LES. If the sphincter muscle does not close well, then the food, liquid and stomach leaks back into the esophagus. This is known as reflux or gastreosophageal reflux. This might be the result of reflux, and can also damage the esophagus.

The risk factors for reflux include haital hernia, it is a condition in which some part of the stomach moves along with the diaphragm. Obesity, Cigarettes and possibly the alcohol might increase the chances of GERD. Heartburn and Gastroeosphageal reflux can by bought on or worsen the pregnancy with many medications. These drugs include:

    Antichloinergics,

Beta-blockers for high blood pressure or heart disease

    Bronchodialtors for Asthma

Calcium channel blockers for high blood pressure

Dopamine active drugs for Parkinson’s disease

Progestin for abnormal menstrual bleeding or the birth control

    Sedatives for insomnia or anxiety

    Tricycle antidepressants

It is estimated that out of 4 million babies born in the US, almost 35 percent of them have difficulty with reflux within the few months of their life, which is known as splitting up GERD might lead to Barrett’s esophagus, is a type of intestinal metaplasia which is a precursor condition for carcinoma. The risk of progression from Barrett’s dysplasia in uncertain but it is said to be found in 20 percent of the cases.
