After the introduction of new model of Supra, Toyota took a giant leap in the direction of serious high performance car. Using the subframe, suspension and the drivetrain that assemblies from the Lexus SC 300, test model pre-production started in the year December 1992 with 20 models, the official mass production began in April 1993. The new Supra was a redesigned version with rounded body styling and also featured two new engines: it naturally aspirated the Toyota 2JZ-GE that produce 220 hp and a twin turbocharged Toyota 2JZ-GTE producing 276 hp and a torque of 318 ft•lb for some of the Japanese version. For the models which are to be exported to America and Europe model the Toyota upgraded the Supra turbo's engine is much smaller, steel wheeled turbochargers with bigger fuel injectors etc.

This new increase in the power resulted in 320 hp at the 5600 rpm. The turbochargers variant could achieve 0-60 mph in 4.9 seconds and a quarter mile time of13.3 with a speed of 109 mph. The turbo versions of this car reached a speed of over 177 mph, all of the stock cars are restricted to 112 km/h. Comparing to the other sports cars of the era, the Supra was heavier than Mazda RX-7 and aluminum bodied Acura NSX but it weighs less than Nissan 300 ZX Turbo and the Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4. For the model year in the US, the turbo model was available with automatic transmission due to standard specification requirements.
