The Toyota iQ  won Car of the Year Japan award. The iQ is one of a whole new generation of Toyota compacts that utilizes other six major packaging advantages. It will enable the company to build a seven-seater on the platform of a Yaris.

It is not exactly a four-seater. In crowded European cities, having a car this short size can bring genuine advantages in finding the curbside parking space. And its turning circle is of just 308 in. also it can be wonderfully useful when you have taken the wrong turn.

As it has the same width as a normal small car, and somewhat higher, the iQ feels more spacious and airy from the driver's seat. Out on a highway, it drives like much bigger too. The ride is comfortably loping, and the thing is pretty stable and is not badly affected by truck eddies. It's a lot better than a smart.

We tried out the iQ with the 1.0L three-cylinder gas engine. This unit has a happy acoustic beat and can be revved hard, but long gearing cripples its performance. The 0-to-60 time of about 14 sec, and having a top speed of just 93 mph, you have very little in reserve for fast highway upgrades or even headwinds.

The idea behind manufacturing Yaris is not to build a cheap money saver car but to build a car with a level similar to Yaris.
