   The Bank of England was formed in 1694, followed by the Bank of Scotland a year later. Both began to issue paper money. During the wars of Napoleonic’s, The value of Bank of England floated their value to relative gold.
   During the late 19th and early 20th century many other countries adopted the gold standard. As a result different conversion rates between different currencies could be determined by comparing it to gold standards.
