    Hi there,

The new protrusion above the tooth that had root canal may not be a piece of tooth, but could be developing infection at the end of the root of the root canal tooth.  Of course, without an xray and direct exam I am somewhat at a loss in trying to give you an exact diagnosis.

My suggestion is to begin warm salt water rinses. Hopefully the warm salt water will allow the area to begin to drain.  More important, the root canal may be failing.  Your dentist should reevaluate and if the infection exists he should send you to a root canal specialist to help.
Of course, a fragment of tooth or bone is possible.
    wish you best of luck
