Halloween is an event celebrated on October 31in many European and other countries. On that day, people from different parts of the world perform many activities such as trick-or-treating, and carving jack-o'-lanterns. They also  attend costume parties, apple bobbing, bonfires,  tell scary stories, visit haunted attractions, play pranks, and also watch horror films.

Nicholas Rogers, a well known historian, trying to probe the origins of Halloween, briefs that whilst "some folklorists have found its origins within the Roman feast of Pomona, known as the goddess of fruits and grains, or in Parentalia known as the festival of the dead,  associated to the Celtic festival of Samhain, that was originally spelled as Samuin (pronounced sow-an or sow-in)".  The Irish name of the festival is derived from Old Irish that means roughly "summer's end".

In the 16th century, the word Halloween was first attested and portrayed a Scottish variant of the fuller All-Hallows-Even ("evening"), that means the night before All Hallows Day. Although this phrase All Hallows is also traced in Old English (ealra hālgena mæssedæg, mass-day of all saints). Until 1556, All-Hallows-Even is itself not attested.

Development of signs and artifacts  linked with Halloween got shape over time. For instance, the carving of jack-o'-lanterns springs from the souling custom of carving turnips into lanterns as a way of remembering the souls held in purgatory. In Ireland and Scotland at Halloween the turnip has traditionally been used for many years. People who migrated to North America started using the native pumpkin, which are easily available and much larger in size.  It has made them easier for them to carve than turnips. The American tradition of carving pumpkins is recorded in 1837 during the harvesting seasons of crops.
