how do i tell if my controller or my hdd is bad?

Dell pent 4 Gen 2 w/raid 0, added WD 400 gb HDD with included Promise SATA controller for a backup drive.  Worked fine for 3-4 years not system will not start unless i unplug SATA cable to the 400 gb HDD.
